The block lamp was designed by Harri Koskinen while still a student at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. As a student Koskinen explored the difficulty of casting an object in glass. He came up with the block lamp which appears to have a light bulb suspended in air. Although it resembles a block of ice that was not the intention of the designer, it stands only for itself as a block of glass. The lamp was put into production by Design House Stockholm in 1998.
